Creative: Jerry’s Fall from Grace

As I sit atop my creation, I tall. Then I flush. I live a life where everything I want is absolute. I knew I only had to put on a spectacle with my robot, Donald Biden. After years of civil dispute, riots, and murders, I lobbied my robot for the 2024 election.
“All set to start the interview, Mr. Spring?” she asked. “Please call me, Jerry,” I replied. My chest began to burn under the heat of the light and the glare of the camera. I have once again divided the country to be either for or against the Virtual President I have constructed.
“Hello, everybody! My name is-” Her voice began to fade as I took notice of the viewer count. 70 million and rising. I had just managed to force the lump back down my throat when she asked her first question. “This is the first time in history that a non-human politician has made it this far. What result do you expect to see tonight?” I replaced myself in my seat and sat up straight, “I plan to see an election map similar to that of 2020; I do. The division we saw in that election will most likely repeat itself tonight. With a staggering increase in young voters, I expect to see a swing in my independent candidate’s direction.” She continued as if she had rehearsed, “And what do you have to say to everyone who is on the fence about voting for your lifeless candidate?” I had predicted this question would make an appearance. In a clear and confident tone, I relayed, “I think that the improvement of AI and their programming over the years should speak for itself. Nowadays, there are more AI in unskilled labor positions than humans. Another thing I would like to highlight is the unbiased nature of the machine. My candidate was programmed to do whatever is statistically best for the people, economy, etc.” She continued again, “There have been reports that your candidate has been out and about, mingling with people to get a feel for its character. Is this true?” Has my candidate been out? I hadn’t released him since the debate last week. I stumbled on my words and asked for a glass of water. Then I continued, “Yes, this is true. I thought that the people would be more comfortable with voting him in if they got to know him.” She replied critically, “Know a robot? Could you elaborate on that, please?” “Sure thing,” I replied, “My AI has a programmable personality. He knows jokes, most of which were written by myself. I would say he’s pretty funny, though.” I coughed up a laugh, but I don’t think I did very well. “That’s all we have time for today. For information regarding the election, be sure to tune into…”
The interview did not go as planned. Where is my robot? I programmed him with the utmost precision and security, and I certainly did not program my robot to leave the facility. The voting will open up soon, which means I have little time to get him back.
“Jerry! Jerry! Check the news!” I heard a frantic voice behind me say.
As I turned to look into the multiple monitors on the wall, the most updated monitor caught my eye. There I saw, Donald Biden in a glitch. Right outside the pub, he sputtered and shook. I have no clue what could have caused this. As the camera zoomed in on Donald, he began to spark. Before I could comprehend what was happening, he seemed to go back to normal. Then he took off at top speed. I need to get a grip on this situation before it spirals out of control.
I rushed to my vehicle with my ears open. Where is Donald going?
Once I caught up in my vehicle, he began speaking to me in a familiar voice. “Hello, Jerry,” the spokesperson said calmly. I know who this is; I just can’t put my finger on it. “Who are you,” I asked fearfully, “and how did you get control of Donald?” The spokesperson laughed maniacally, “You don’t remember me?” For the life of me, I could not remember. Curiously I said, “No. Who are you?” “It’s Jimbob, Jerry. Do you remember me now?” I thought deeply but couldn’t come up with anything. The spokesperson continued, “You pants me at the fair in middle school. Everybody laughed at me, including you. This is my revenge. I am going to take your robot and destroy the Whitehouse.” I do remember pantsing Jimbob.
In this situation, I am powerless. He has full control of my candidate, and he will ruin his chances. How could I have been careless in coding? The only thing for me to do now is to tell the authorities and hope that Donald will be stopped. This is the end of the virtual president, Donald. Goodbye, Donald; I will always love you.
I love the concept of an interview with the candidate. It reminds me of the interviews with Sophia – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omgJi5-YT6U
The dialogue and the antagonistic interviewer seems spot on. Definitely anchors make their name by being able to trip up and expose holes in the veneer of politicians. But the story leaves me wondering– if this robotic candidate is capable of interacting with constituents, why isn’t the reporter interviewing him? An interview with the maker rather than the candidate (especially with the candidate described as “lifeless”) would seem to undermine the maker’s intentions in promoting his candidate.
The runaway candidate who suddenly starts doing strange and threatening things seems very familiar somehow…
