        Post your tech maps here!

Unfortunetly, due to a massicve pothole by James, I twisted my ankle in a way ankle’s aren’t meant to be twisted and that threw a wrench in my plans to walk to Walmart. (Everyone over there please be careful!). That being said, I will at least try to save my grade by answering the questions to the best of my ability.

          1) did any of these technologies exist before the 1950’s?

I know that on the way to Walmart / down chestnut street there are the cross walk talking things. These likely did not exist before the 50’s nor the security systems set up in the houses that you walk by (there are ADT yard signs, I promise i’m not a stalker)

          2) are these technologies a significant part of your life?

YES! I literally dream about that stupid ticking that the walkways make and daily I have to cross one.

          3) Imagine you are living in the decade before this tech existed. How would you try to convince people it should, or shouldn’t, be developed?

As for the home security, I would definetly advocate for something like that because I personally believe in the evil of all humans but I am not smart enough to event such thing and never have held much social power in my life to be able to convince someone to make such a thing. As for the crosswalks, no. Just teach everyone how to drive NOT like a maniac and hope everyone has enough common sense to cross when it is safe. Survival of the fittest ya’ll.

          4) Imagine you are a visited by a time traveler from the near future (the year 2050). What do you think they would tell you about this technology?

30 years from now all of the technology we see today would probably be a joke to that generation of future children (like how we make fun of Nokia phones). Not to mention Moore’s Law where it is stated that technology grows exponentially.

My area is a fairly rural region in the North Georgia mountains, so there is not too much tech beyond basic infrastructure/luxuries. Other than the types of tech mentioned on the map (which are discussed in greater detail below) there are power lines, air conditioning units, occasional automated sprinklers, and I believe one house has an invisible fence to keep their dog from wandering off.

I was surprised to see that one of the lawns had an automatic lawnmower, which I believe is the most advanced type of technology I saw in the development. I can very safely say that this technology did not exist before the 1950’s. This technology is not a significant part of my life, in fact it has nothing to do with me. I would probably argue against it,if I was there ten years before it was made, solely for the reason that I don’t like the idea of lawnmower blades not being controlled by a person. Stabby the roomba’s the pinnacle for autonomous robots, we don’t need more.

One particularly common type of technology seen in this area were groupings of cable boxes, transformers, and streetlights. They seem to always be together, for some reason I don’t understand. I know streetlights and transformers existed before the 1950’s, but I actually don’t know when cable boxes began being used, so I have no idea on that. Yes these are very much a part of my daily life, the transformers and cable boxes especially. I would argue for all of these technologies, soley because I can’t see any harm in having them that outweighs the benefits they give.

              My Tech Walk

The technologies I ran into while on my walk make life easier. They keep the flow of everyday life moving smoothly. The stoplights and the electronic crosswalks make it easy and safe to move throughout the campus. Near the heat plant, I see a gas pump every day. Fuel is one of the most important things in today’s society. I witnessed a camera too. Cameras keep us safe and take away some of our privacy.

Most of these technologies have existed before the 1950s. The thing that has changed most about this technology is that it has been improved upon. Gas engines have gotten better and more efficient. Cameras can pick up colored light and electronics have improved.

Electricity is very important in my life. Most of my entertainment is due to electricity. Without it, life is a little bit more difficult. A crosswalk and cameras do not mean much to my life. They may help me keep my life, but I could still cross the road without technology. Cameras just record information. I do not need to take pictures or do surveillance.

If I lived a decade ago I would convince people to use technology by showing it to them.

Someone in the future would probably think we are doing things in a very roundabout way. They would say, “Why are you still using gasoline and burning coal?”

The purple line is my initial walk and then pink is my continued walk. (The red marker is my house)

                1) Most of the technologies I saw on my walk were streetlights, lawnmowers, and cars. Streetlights were built-in 1878, lawnmowers in 1830, and cars in 1885.

                2) The streetlights illuminate the dark when I get home from work and my car is what gets me to and fro anywhere. In a sense, the lawnmower is important too as it keeps my lawn tidy but not the most important technology in my life.

                3) I would try to convince people that we need these technologies by setting up test areas or hold trials and let people see for themselves.

                4) Besides the street lamps, the time traveler would probably tell me everything else is outdated or in need of upgrades.
