In trying to think of an example for this I thought of many eco-futurism examples, but couldn’t think of many eco-modernism. There are plenty of documentaries covering this topic, but they aren’t particularly sci-fi. Then I came to the example in the movie Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs.
I know this sounds very weird and possibly also a completely different genre. But I think it has some themes in it that fit.
To begin, this movie is set on an island where their main source of food and really their whole island revolves around sardines, the little silver colored fish. The innovation proposed to solve this bland lifestyle of the people on this island was provided by Flint Lockwood, a budding scientist, and inventor. He invents the FLDSMDFR which creates any food you request out of water. This is a miracle at first until it ultimately becomes uncontrollable.
You may ask, so… what does this have to do with ecomodernism. Well, the problem they’re trying to solve was the lack of diversity in food on their island. While not directly related this could be interpreted as a lack of diversity in the ecosystem with many species going on the endangered species list. Who is to say we won’t someday end up with just sardines to eat. They try to fix this by creating a machine to create more diversity. In one way they improve the diversity of the foods they eat but in another way, they create foul weather that plagues the world with giant food. This could relate to the overcompensation of species introduction that sometimes happens in areas of the world when certain species become invasive.
Overall, this movie, in an obscure way, represents the lack of diversity of an ecosystem leading to the healing of one and eventually humans over populating that ecosystem and leading to an invasive species that harms the existing one.
Eat your sardines kiddos.
Awesome example! Greed, corruption, and lack of compassion are very hard to rid anything of. Although, like you mentioned they are something we can definitely strive for. All of those factor into the wellbeing of humanity. It seems like this is also a very good connection to sacrifice. Good job!
Great connections! I agree that in the same way these games have separate civilizations in one universe, we have separate civilizations on one earth. It is in our best interest to make alliances with other regions and races. No matter if we like it or not, we are all here together and great things could come out of humanity if we’d all work together. Great example!
Good point. I see sci-fi as a predictor or a possible prediction. Yes, this may be true or false when it comes to the real world, but if we ignore the lessons from sci-fi we might end up as they do in the stories. Sci-fi is based on futuristic science, although some are completely fake, there is more sci-fi that relates to the world in more ways than we think, all it takes is digging a little deeper and connecting those dots.
Great example Darius! I also completely agree with the preventative measures you highlighted. It is so important for all of us to stay informed and cautious. It is also very surprising to me that some people still blow off the virus, despite the death that has been caused by it. Those people should not die in vain, the families of those affected by the virus may not have a loved one around for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any other important family gathering and that is a very sobering thought to have. It is so important to follow all guidelines from the scientists who have spent their entire lives studying things like this. Failure to do so will only cause more death and hardship. Great example and application to a very recent and scary issue.
Good example and fascinating personal experience Jean-Paul! There is an increasing problem with the state of the world and the impact we directly have on it. There are so many things and locations that could be lost if we continue on our way like we have been. There must be action taken! The problem like you suggested was with the government’s lack of care. Individual work and progress are so important, but nothing much will be changed unless the government and companies change their ways. I know it’s difficult to change, but we all must do it before we don’t have the chance to. Great lesson!
Great example Tallis! I can really see those issues in the government now. There are so many ways that people are controlled in our modern society. Even smaller instances of employees in companies or children in a family. Even the education system we have today is somewhat controlling. There are certainly ways to combat this, but it may be increasingly more difficult as time goes on.
If The Government Could Read My Mind – The Vandals
The song I chose to reflect on brings up many themes from sci-fi as well as from one of my favorite and most important books of all time, “1984”. The main theme of the song is that the character in the song doesn’t care if the government could read their mind because all he is thinking about is a girl.
This song brings up many sci-fi themes such as secretly funded internment camps, biological warfare labs, Martian traded technologies, and mind control psychologies just to name a few. These are all very important in sci-fi. Sometimes in sci-fi, the storyline represents conspiracy against the government, and each of these is clearly related to a futuristic government.
Also in the lyrics of this song, the singer repeats:
“I’ll let them do what they wanna do”
This also represents a theme that we have brought up in class of people not recognizing what the government is doing and just living out their days in blissful ignorance. Just like in The Matrix.
The main theme that got me so interested, is the theme from “1984” of the government reading his mind. This is the overall theme of the entire song and clearly represents that theme from the Novel and many other sci-fi works that involve dystopian government control.

This article is of the same issue but instead of following my revised story where South Korea had reacted quite softly, they highlight the harshness and demanding nature for apology from North Korea. The way that I revised my article was as if I were Winston from “1984” in North Korea trying to wipe away the negative news against North Korea. The real situation that challenges my revisions is that they don’t take anything lightly from North Korea. Thinking along the lines of how South Korea’s article utopia might be is that all relations are cut from the evil of North Korea. They may represent a utopia that completely removes North Korea and banishes or downgrades any contact with the North. In this way they may live peacefully without any conflict from their neighbors. In my perspective I really chose the side of North Korea in trying to become a utopia within themselves. This article could be revised more easily so that South Korea could show great hate toward North Korea. We always think of a utopia as something good and positive, but in this case perhaps the good and positive would be writing an article that removed North Korea from South Korea’s line of sight. Similar in fashion to sweeping the dust under the rug. One might also argue that this would create a dystopian feeling to the situation, but in most people, I know at least for myself, if I don’t like something or it causes me pain or negativity then I want it gone. In a way, a utopia created from this article would portray those same characteristics.
I personally think that there must be an appropriate amount of regulations on the creations of new technologies. By having these regulations it provides us with a safe way to innovate. Yes, some inventions and improvements have been made because of uncontrolled conditions, but there can still be that same innovation with rules. Regulations are essential to the balance between humans and technology.
If we think of a topic of today’s world, COVID, the vaccine is a technology. We have systems in place that check the progress of the vaccine and if the trials aren’t going according to regulation then it is shut down. this is to ensure the health and safety of the world because what’s worse than randomly getting the virus? If we injected it into everyone on purpose with no real test of its effectiveness and safety.
